The Creative Arts Emmys celebrate artists and crafts people in a wide array of genres including reality, variety, documentary, animation, comedy, drama, limited series, and movies. Last year, the traditional ceremonies for the 2020 Creative Arts Emmys were replaced by a virtual event spanning several nights. The five-night event was hosted by Nicole Byer. This year’s two-night ceremony will be edited down to air on Saturday, September 18 on FXX, the night before the Primetime Emmys telecast....

The third Disney Marvel release in just over four months, it opened below “Black Widow” ($80 million) and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” ($75 million). Sony also opened “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” last month, to $90 million. “Eternals” opening gross fell about 10 percent beneath already-skittish expectations. That may reflect ongoing uncertainty about theatrical exhibition recovery, but some common sense is in order. Three top Marvel releases, plus “Venom,” in such a short window should mean a decrease in interest....

At a time when the border that separates movies and television can seem like a relic from an outdated map, the “Fear Street” trilogy makes those divisions seem more irrelevant than ever. Here we have three feature-length titles set for release on consecutive Fridays, each of which belongs to a different tradition of horror cinema (some of which share many of the same actors) and all of which appear to have been shot at the harried clip of an episodic production....

Yet, there’s a confidence and a streamlined approach to “1978” that makes for a richer experience in both part and whole than its predecessor “Fear Street Part 1: 1994.” The surprise isn’t that it deviates from the groundrules set out in the film before it, or even the scores of horror films from in and around the decade in which it’s set. It’s that when “Fear Street: 1978” is given the opportunity to fulfill the promises it’s made for itself, it does so unreservedly, with a clear sense of purpose....

Here’s the synopsis courtesy of Apple: “In ‘Finch,’ a man, a robot and a dog form an unlikely family in a powerful and moving adventure of one man’s quest to ensure that his beloved canine companion will be cared for after he’s gone. Hanks stars as Finch, a robotics engineer and one of the few survivors of a cataclysmic solar event that has left the world a wasteland. But Finch, who has been living in an underground bunker for a decade, has built a world of his own that he shares with his dog, Goodyear....

IndieWire elected to rank freshman series by the overall-viewer averages of their series premieres. These Nielsen numbers include any viewer (age 2 or older) and counts one week of delayed viewing. We’ve included ratings in the key adults 18-49 demographics but elected to rank shows by total viewers. This lets us avoid tied rankings and provides more-digestible numbers, but it disproportionately rewards older-skewing shows (i.e., CBS). In general, CBS was the uncontested king of the rankings, with three of its series topping the list, all of which were given full-season pickups on Wednesday....

Hulu shared a first look at the upcoming Fox Searchlight film “Fire Island,” starring Bowen Yang, Zane Phillips, James Scully, Matt Rogers, Tomas Matos, Torian Miller, and Margaret Cho. The gay-centric rom-com centers on a group of friends who embark on a week-long vacation filled with hook-ups, debauchery, and friendship make-or-break moments; screenwriter Joel Kim Booster also stars, while Andrew Ahn (“Spa Night”) directs. “Fire Island” premieres on Hulu on June 3....

Thompson began by planting an enthusiastic wet one on Poehler, which Rudolph followed up with a very friendly feel-up (Poehler’s laughter would seem to confirm all this was pre-approved). Rudolph then announced, in one of her trademark old timey voices with a faux-British accent: “Bear with me, I had a vodka epidural before I came here.” Thompson and Rudolph then showed off their musical improv skills by riffing on very enthusiastic theme songs, including one for nominated Netflix show “The Crown,” which naturally sounded nothing like the actual theme song....

“I was, like, Googling myself at one point, and I was on this website, which was kind of dedicated to the kind of ‘Harry Potter’ fandom, Leung said (via Insider). “I remember reading all the comments. And, yeah, it was a lot of racist shit. Somebody had actually created a website, a hate site. Harry Styles’ turn as suburban husband Jack, who may or may not be gaslighting his wife Alice (Florence Pugh), made for an emotional moment on set that “left us all in tears,” according to Wilde. The sequence, when Jack is promoted at his company Victory by his controlling boss Frank (Chris Pine), was a standout moment for Styles’ “primal” performance that was, well, wild(e). “It’s a strange scene, full of fascist references, and a disturbing amount of male rage,” Wilde told Rolling Stone....

How much might it have earned without HBO Max availability? “The Little Things” stars Denzel Washington, but it received mediocre to poor reviews as well as a B- Cinemascore — the lowest he’s seen in a decade. It feels like a stretch to believe that in a theater-exclusive release it would have grossed above $10 million, and perhaps no more than $16 million if all theaters were open. “The Little Things” was a smart bet for theaters under the current circumstances....

Based on the video-game franchise of the same name, the highly anticipated series stars Pedro Pascal and “Catherine Called Birdy and “Game of Thrones” alum Bella Ramsey as survivors of the apocalypse. Joel (Pascal) is tasked with smuggling tween Ellie (Ramsey) out of a quarantine zone to safety, with Pascal tapping into his “Mandalorian” vigilante persona. “Everybody I’ve cared for has either died or left me,” Ellie states in the first footage....

WarnerMedia stated that “The Undoing” finale garnered 3 million viewers across all platforms, which makes the show the most-watched night of viewing for an original series on HBO since “Big Little Lies” aired its finale in 2019. “The Undoing,” which starred Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, has also been a weekly ratings success for the premium cabler; total viewing increased 43 percent from last week and more than doubled premiere night numbers, while linear performance was up 42 percent from last week and up 168 percent from the series premiere, according to WarnerMedia....

The former First Lady, Senator, and Secretary of State leads “Gutsy,” an eight-part AppleTV+ docuseries based on the Clintons’ New York Times bestselling book “The Book of Gutsy Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience.” The series premieres September 9. Throughout “Gutsy,” the Clintons’ personal heroes ranging from Kim Kardashian, Mariska Hargitay, Megan Thee Stallion, Amy Schumer, and Gloria Steinem are interviewed, plus fellow mother-daughter duo Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson....

Filmmaker Ali Abbasi was a college student in Tehran at the time and baffled by the response. “It was insane,” he said in a recent interview with IndieWire, but even more surprising was how long it took for police to capture Hanaei, even though his murders followed such an obvious pattern that suggests he could have been stopped much sooner. “If this happened in Nebraska or whatever, it would be national news for a long time until they caught him,” Abbasi said....

James Cameron is a consistent over-achiever. He works overtime to create movies that make audiences happy. He tries to stimulate their pleasure center. And he wants to lure them back for repeat viewings. Released 13 years after the original, Cameron’s “Avatar” sequel, “The Way of Water,” cost so much ($350-400 million) that the filmmaker estimates it has to gross $2 billion to make a profit. (It’s among the most expensive films ever made....

She was referring to the daunting odds of her director-husband’s stark, expressionistic take on the ultimate Shakespearean tragedy, though she may as well have been addressing the greatest crisis in modern creativity, and one that the movies face more than most other mediums. With its silent cinema aesthetic and gruff, visceral performances, “Macbeth” certainly provides an original take on one very familiar narrative. But NYFF, as a whole, projects an ethos altogether different from other prominent festivals on the fall circuit, as its curatorial strategy heralds the art of the new....

Ready to get into the holiday spirit? The first two episodes of “Hawkeye,” starring Jeremy Renner as the highly skilled archer and ex-Avenger, premiered exclusively on Disney+ November 24. The series is set in post-blip New York City where Clint Barton (a.k.a. Hawkeye) is on a mission to get back to his family for Christmas. His holiday wish gets complicated when a threat from the past comes knocking. Reluctantly, Hawkeye teams up with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) — a 22-year-old archer and his biggest fan — to help him unravel a criminal conspiracy....

Are you ready for some football? The 2021 NFL season is officially back and sports fans who might not have a TV or a cable subscription can stream games online through a bunch of different budget-friendly platforms. For starters, every Sunday Night Football game for this season will air on NBC and stream simultaneously on Peacock, including Super Bowl LVI, which is slated to take place on February 13, 2022....
