On the film side, the nominees were actually quite different from what you’ll see at the Oscars next week. In the Original Screenplay category, “Licorice Pizza,” “Don’t Look Up,” and “King Richard” were still nominated, but “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” were replaced with “Being the Ricardos.” The Adapted Screenplay category was even more distinct, with only two Oscar contenders (“Dune” and “CODA”) nominated. But it ultimately did not matter, as two Oscar nominees took the top prizes....

“4 Feet High” tells the story of Juana (Marisol Agostina Irigoyen), a young woman who uses a wheelchair and has just transferred to a new school. In her quest to find herself, she gets enmeshed with a group of fellow students protesting the country’s lack of sexual education in schools. There are two components to taking in “4 Feet High.” The most accessible — meaning what will capture able-bodied audiences — is watching the six-episode series....

More than 30 years after he first donned that infamous Batman suit, Michael Keaton is stepping back into familiar territory. On Monday, Keaton’s agency confirmed that he will appear as Batman in the forthcoming movie “The Flash,” which began filming in the U.K. this week. The film won’t be hitting theaters until 2022, which gives you plenty of time to catch up Keaton’s “Batman” movies and a bunch of other films in his catalog such as “Beetlejuice,” “Birdman,” “Multiplicity,” and “The Founder....

Krasinski also tapped a new cinematographer for his sequel: Polly Morgan (“Legion,” “Lucy in the Sky”) replaced Charlotte Bruus Christensen, and once again shot on film (using Panavision Panaflex Millennium XL2 cameras, Kodak Vision3 500T 5219 film stock, and T-Series anamorphic lenses). “John and I were both passionate about shooting on film,” she said. “But this felt more like a modern western, and, all during prep, we talked about ‘No Country for Old Men,’ ‘True Grit,’ and ‘There Will Be Blood....

The Fines are producing the documentary through their recently launched social impact studio Change Content with A24. The husband and wife team’s “Inocente,” about a homeless and undocumented California teenager, won the 2013 Oscar for best documentary short. Their most recent movie, “Life According to Sam,” about a teen living with a rare genetic disorder, was released by HBO in 2013 and earned a Peabody and Emmy. The insurrection at the Capitol last week left five people dead....

Variety’s sources, meanwhile, are disputing Smith was ever asked to leave at all. As TMZ reported, “The Academy could have buttonholed the Best Actor presenters and told them in advance … if Will won, simply say he’s not invited on stage and then quickly say ‘We’ll be right back’ and then they would go to commercial. That didn’t happen, and we’re told the reasoning was [that] the Academy officials felt it would make a bad situation even worse....

As previously reported, “Don’t Look Up” will star Lawrence as a low-level astronomer who discovers along with her partner that a giant asteroid is heading toward earth and will destroy it. The scientists embark on a tour around the country warning the population about its inevitable death, but people aren’t so quick to believe them or care. A THR report in February put the budget at around $75 million, but a source close to Netflix told IndieWire at the time that number was not correct...

All due respect to James Cameron and his underwater actors in “Avatar: The Way of Water,” but you can’t beat the filmmaking gamble of Casper Kelly’s “Adult Swim Yule Log.” Adult Swim’s first feature-length live action endeavor dropped without warning December 11 after the season finale of “Ricky and Morty”: A cozy two-minute yule log video morphs into a disturbing home invasion horror movie that becomes a supernatural cabin-in-the-woods thriller with a young couple (Justin Miles and Andrea Laing) who may be at the mercy of a haunted fireplace....

The Emmy nominee shared that Tonka is a “good friend” who is missing amid a pending PETA investigation into chimpanzee breeding facility Missouri Primate Foundation in Festus, Missouri. PETA is offering its own $10,000 reward, which Cumming has now matched. “During the months we filmed together, baby Tonka and I became good friends, playing and grooming each other and just generally larking about,” Cumming said in a statement to Variety....

After winning an Emmy for playing Nicole Kidman’s emotionally and physically abusive husband in “Big Little Lies,” Skarsgård suggested Kidman play his mother in Robert Eggers’ Viking epic “The Northman,” now in theaters. And Skarsgård is even looking to explore a “brother-sister road trip comedy” with his Oscar-winning friend Kidman in pursuit of a “lighter” project together. Skarsgård’s faith in filmmakers has been a cornerstone of his decades-spanning career, from going “full method” as a gasoline-swigging model in Ben Stiller’s 2001 comedy “Zoolander” to blindly signing on for Lars von Trier’s critically acclaimed “Melancholia” a decade later....

Schumer took to the stage April 2 for a comedy set at Las Vegas’ Mirage Theater as part of the Aces of Comedy series, and the “Life & Beth” star didn’t hold back when it came to revealing what the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences didn’t want her to say at the awards show. “I don’t even know what to say about the Oscars,” Schumer said, as reported by Vanity Fair....

An April 13 report from the media analysts at MoffettNathanson doesn’t mince words: “Roku: Three Key Things to Worry About.” Since it’s a major technology equity research firm that came to the conclusion, we might suggest the report itself represents a fourth. First concern: The creation of Warner Bros. Discovery is poised to take a major chunk out of Roku’s bottom line. People signing up for streaming services through Roku make for a very attractive revenue stream (aka “high-margin content distribution revenue growth”)....

She also has a music career of her own, having written and performed songs for a number of other films. But “Annette” marked something of a shift for how she performed vocally: all of the singing is done live in-camera, and the characters are often asked to sing during moments where one wouldn’t exactly think to burst out in song and dance. Cotillard manages to sing while swimming, having a cigarette, going to the bathroom, and at one point, during a sex scene (in possibly the only song in a musical ever sung during cunnilingus)....

Unfortunately, this three-part Discovery+ docuseries has little new to say on its subject — or the themes of power and abuse — because we’ve seen this narrative play out many times before. Hell, even just this week actor Shia LaBeouf, accused of abusive behavior by an ex-lover, embarked on a redemption tour in the hopes of reshaping his own narrative. Bad behavior from Hollywood’s It boys didn’t start or end with the “Call Me By Your Name” star....

Instead, Rahim decides to do the noble thing and seek out the bag’s owner, and upon doing so is widely praised. Once the motive behind this act of generosity is questioned, though, things get muddled, and people around him start to question whether he’s actually deserving of plaudits. As an audience, we also begin to wonder: Should we feel sympathy for Rahim or skepticism of him? This is a question often invited by Farhadi’s work, which is known for exploring ambiguous moral situations....

The day that Oscar nominations are announced feels like an unofficial holiday for movie lovers. The culmination of extensive campaigns and months of speculation results in a list of nominees that tends to prompt plenty of spirited debate. It’s a day to fill out your ballots, lament the painful snubs, and celebrate the underrated favorites from last year that somehow slid into the pool of nominations. But beyond excitement about the awards themselves, it’s a day to look back at the best movies from the past year....
