Whether it’s the famous “Malice at the Palace” Pacers-Pistons brawl finally being unraveled by those who were on the inside, Olympian Caitlyn Jenner reflecting on her journey to winning gold, boxer Christy Martin in the fight of her life outside the ring, professional tennis player Mardy Fish opening up about his struggles with mental health, or a misfit band of hockey players known as the Trashers taking orders from the teenage son of an alleged mob boss, “Untold” gets to the heart of the passion and single mindedness it takes to be a champion and the ways in which the triumphs can be undone off the field....

The show, which marks the superhero franchise’s first original installment on Disney’s streaming service, stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as their MCU characters Wanda (aka Scarlet Witch) and Vision. Despite Vision’s apparent death in 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” the duo appear to be living an idealized life in a suburb — until they realize that things aren’t necessarily as they seem. More than halfway through “WandaVision” Episode 4, two characters making their return to the MCU share a frank back-and-forth. “All right, brass tacks,” FBI Agent Jimmy Woo (played by the always excellent Randall Park) says to his colleague, Dr. Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings, who was last seen ’round these parts in “Thor: The Dark World”). “What are we looking at here? Is it an alternate reality, time travel, some cockamamie social experiment?...

As Gina Prince-Bythewood’s historical epic “The Woman King” was hitting theaters on Friday after a successful premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last week and a solid Thursday night opening of nearly $2 million in early showings, on Twitter, a different narrative was unfolding. As the hashtag #BoycottWomanKing trended on the social media platform, a number of users professed their disinterest in seeing a film that they believed obscured the history of the Kingdom of Dahomey, in which the Viola Davis-starring film is set....

You know what happened next: a pandemic. Its impact shut down whole countries and has claimed over a million lives to date. For the movies, the changes were swift and brutal: postponed and canceled projects, delayed release dates, pivots to PVOD and streaming, the closure of movie theaters. On the TV front, “Schitt’s Creek,” which won’t even be eligible for Emmy consideration this year following its series finale in early 2020, won Best Edited Comedy Series for Commercial Television, with “Ted Lasso” winning in the Comedy category for Non-Commercial Television. And “Better Call Saul” took Best Edited Drama Series for Commercial Television, while “Ozark” nabbed the Non-Commercial category. It’s no surprise that Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” won the Dramatic award....

Smith’s slap — delivered after Rock made a crass joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair — wasn’t even an isolated moment. It took over the final hour-plus of the broadcast. As the presumptive favorite to win Best Actor, audiences knew his impromptu trip to the stage wouldn’t be his last of the evening. Sean Combs could promise the beef would be squashed at the after-party, but viewers didn’t have to wait for backstage reporters to get the scoop....

The Oscar race comes down to what 9,487 eligible Academy voters actually saw in this strange roller-coaster year: One minute theaters were open again, the next a winter surge forced the mostly senior Oscar voters back into their lairs. Last year, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Disney+ adaptation of Broadway smash “Hamilton” earned a special award; this year, rookie feature director Miranda’s “Tick, Tick, Boom” landed on the Top Ten Films list, along with movies from lauded veterans Adam McKay, Paul Thomas Anderson, Denis Villeneuve, Guillermo del Toro, Jane Campion, Joel Coen, and Steven Spielberg, as well as relative newcomers Sian Heder and Reinaldo Marcus Green. Like last year, eight of the ten films were directed by men, with two women — Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) and Heder (“CODA”) — also on deck for the honor....

For the first time since 2019, CNN dropped out of the Top 5, according to Nielsen data, falling all the way to No. 10. On the bright side, fellow Turner channel TNT finished fifth instead. Nos. 6-10, in order, were: Hallmark Channel, TBS, TLC, INSP (fka The Inspiration Network), and CNN. TNT, TBS, and CNN started 2022 as part of AT&T’s WarnerMedia. That’s very much by design. Inaugural poets are not a requisite of the ceremony. “As Prime Video turns 10, over 175 million Prime members have streamed shows and movies in the past year, and streaming hours are up more than 70 percent year over year,” Bezos said in the company’s Q1 earnings press release. Prime Video is also positioning itself to become a key player in sports programming. Prime Video will become the exclusive home for Thursday Night Football beginning in 2023.
