Gene Kelly certainly didn’t. And yet many cinephiles would say “Singin’ in the Rain” is the greatest-ever movie musical. Those who are on the fence about it now have another chance to assess: Warner Bros. Home Entertainment just released a 4K ultra-HD Blu-ray restoration of the movie, which Kelly co-directed with Stanley Donen, for its 70th anniversary. In a new interview with IndieWire, Kelly’s widow and biographer, Patricia Ward Kelly, talked about the idea of cinematic greatness and what exactly it means — including for when we talk about new movie musicals being made today....

“Saturday Night Live” cast member Chloe Fineman also delivered one of her typically skillful impressions as Britney Spears, who was in the news recently since the premiere of a New York Times Presents documentary, titled “Framing Britney Spears,” on Hulu. In the “Saturday Night Live” sketch below, Fineman as Spears hosts a talk show called “Oops, You Did It Again,” where she interviews the likes of Cruz (played by Aidy Bryant), Cuomo (played by Pete Davidson), and Carano (played by Cecily Strong)....

Moss is one of four newly announced cast members to join the upcoming series, which will be led by “Bodied Bodies Bodies” star Amandla Stenberg. “His Dark Materials” star Dafne Keen, “Inventing Anna” cast member Rebecca Henderson, and Dean-Charles Chapman of “Game of Thrones” and “1917” have also been added to the cast. In addition, previously reported cast members like Emmy-winning “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae, “The Good Place’s” Manny Jacinto, “After Yang’s” Jodie Turner-Smith, and “Russian Doll” star Charlie Barnett have been officially confirmed to star in the series....

Shot in buzzing 16mm and balanced off with archival news footage, voiceovers, and interviews, “The Inheritance” establishes a documentary framework, only to break it down entirely....

Though it’s set in 14th century France, the film explores timely #MeToo themes. Based on Eric Jager’s “The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France,” the story centers around the last judicial duel to occur in the country — where one man was judged against the other in a deadly trial of swords. The duel is staged in response to the alleged rape of Marguerite de Carrouges (Comer) by Jacques Le Gris (Driver) and occurs after Jean de Carrouges (Damon) accuses Le Gris of the crime....

Netflix and Working Title film “The Swimmers” is confirmed to open the 2022 festival on Thursday, September 8. “The Swimmers” follows the journey from war-torn Syria to the 2016 Rio Olympics of two elite swimmers who are sisters and is written and directed by Sally El Hosaini and co-written by multi-award-winner Jack Thorne. “I was deeply moved by the story of these two sisters and wowed by the storytelling,” TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey said in a press statement....

Directed by frequent Phil Lord and Chris Miller collaborator Chris McKay, the apocalyptic alien drama appears to lean hard into the action side of things with a few brief moments of comedic relief, a slight departure from Lord and Miller’s signature action-comedy style.
