Chosen by the Critics Choice Association, which was formed from the merged Broadcast Film Critics Association and Broadcast Television Journalists Association in 2019 and consists of 525 critics and entertainment journalists (including IndieWire’s own Kate Erbland, Eric Kohn, David Ehrlich, and Anne Thompson), the awards align a bit more with established critical opinion. That differentiates it a bit from the many guild awards this time of the year, as well as the Oscars, which are awards selected by industry members.

“Belfast” and “West Side Story” led the Critics Choice Awards nominations with 11 each. “Belfast” ultimately won Best Acting Ensemble, Best Young Performer (Jude Hill), and Best Original Screenplay. “West Side Story” won Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose and Best Editing. “Dune” and “The Power of the Dog” followed close suit with 10 nominations each, and “Licorice Pizza” and “Nightmare Alley” each got eight mentions. In addition to Best Picture, “The Power of the Dog” won Best Director for Jane Campion, Best Cinematography, and Best Adapted Screenplay. “Dune” ultimately won three awards: Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, and Best Score. “Licorice Pizza” won Best Comedy, and “Nightmare Alley” was shut out. Will Smith won Best Actor for “King Richard,” Jessica Chastain won Best Actress for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Troy Kotsur won Best Supporting Actor for “CODA.” The Critics Choice Awards are unique in awarding both film and TV, and on the TV side, “Succession” received the most nods with eight. It ultimately won Best Drama Series, as well as collecting prizes for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Kieran Culkin and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Sarah Snook. And of course, the beloved HBO limited series “Mare of Easttown,” which also received five nominations, won Best Actress in a Limited Series for Kate Winslet and Best Limited Series itself. “Ted Lasso” swept all four categories it was nominated in — just like it did at the Critics Choice Awards last year — and won trophies for Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein, Hannah Waddingham, and for Best Comedy Series. Aside from the “Ted Lasso” and “Succession” dominance, Jean Smart won Best Actress in a Comedy Series for “Hacks” and Lee Jung-jae won Best Actor in a Drama Series for “Squid Game.” The Critics Choice Awards took place at Los Angeles’s Fairmont Century Plaza and were hosted by Nicole Byer and four-time emcee Taye Diggs. A separate venue was set up at London’s historic Savoy Hotel to accommodate the many nominees who will be attending the BAFTA Awards at Royal Albert Hall earlier in the day. The awkwardness of both events being scheduled within the span of a few hours is due to the fact that the CCA Awards had been originally scheduled for January 9 before being pushed back to March 13 on account of the Omicron surge.
